Imagine an ex-President of the USA, just recently out of office, taking off on a 2,500-mile roadtrip with his wife, the former First Lady. That's what happened to Harry and Bess Truman shortly after Harry left office in the early 1950s. On their trip, they had no secret service protection. It was just Harry and the former First Lady traveling like ordinary folks. Harry would walk into a motel office to get a room just like anyone else, and the couple would visit diners for meals. Imagine how surprised the workers and customers must have been at these places to see the man and woman who had just recently left the White House!

Harry got pulled over for speeding by a Pennsylvania State Tropper named Manley Stampler. When the officer reached the driver's window, he immediately recognized the former President. "What am I going to do now?" he thought. At a coffee shop, a man approached Harry and told him about his sick mother, who, he said, was a life-long Democrat. "It would sure mean a lot to her if you would stop by and say hi," he said. Harry thought it was a good idea and spent 20 minutes with the woman, talking like old friends.

You may love this book as much as we did, for a similar reason. It simply seems to improbable that an ex-President could take such a trip in today's times. Imagine George and Laura Bush heading off alone in their car, stopping at Denny's and checking to Motel 6's. Published 2009. 262 pages. Hardcover
