Author Al Hesselbart has written a fascinating book. Mr. Hesselbart is perhaps the foremost RV historian in America. He has been featured on many TV documentaries, and is the manager of the largest RV historical museum, the RV MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana. In this fascinating book he traces the history of the recreational vehicle and its industry from its beginnings right up to the present day. He profiles the individuals who influenced the industry. Some of what he reports is downright fascinating. RV giant Winnebago was created by a Forest City, Iowa funeral director. Fleetwood was founded by a man who made venetian blinds. Wally Bynam, the genius who built Airstream, came on hard times during World War II and had to go to work for his competitor for a year just to put food on his table.

Hesselbart’s stories about early RVs are riveting. You’ll love the one about the 1930s-era fifth wheel trailer that was built for the well-to-do. Heck, it even included private quarters for the chauffeur and the maid! And speaking of fifth wheels, Hesselbart tells the story of the very first ones, which were, in fact, attached to their tow vehicle using a spare tire (the “fifth wheel!”). He also tells you about the world’s largest-ever motorhome, a 65-footer that included a helipad, second story balcony and a portable, four-foot deep swimming pool. And there is so much more. Published in 2008. 144 pages with historical photos.
